2nd BSSCII UPDATE DAY MAY 2019

We held our second educational event on 17 th May at BAD House comprising an “Update Day” to provide expert and evidence-based teaching on common challenges faced by clinicians managing dermatological conditions in immunosuppressed individuals. This year we discussed cutting edge advances in skin cancer research by Professor Catherine Harwood, melanoma immunotherapy by Dr Sophie Papa, alongside important cutaneous toxicities due to melanoma therapy by Dr Louise Fearfield. We received a much needed update on risk of skin cancers with systemic agents from the team at BADBIR and a rheumatological perspective to skin cancers by Dr James Galloway. We also received pertinent updates on the management of HPV and VZV by Dr Jane Sterling and Dr Rod Hay, respectively.

Three outstanding registrar cases were chosen to illustrate some of the issues discussed in the expert lectures, covering the ‘Management of Advanced Melanoma in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients” by Dr Rakesh Anand from Royal Free Hospital, London, “Cutaneous manifestations of Immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome (IRIS)” by Dr Alessandro Gradasi of West Middlessex Hospital and “Oncogenic viral infections in HIV positive organ transplant recipients’, by Drs Pooja Patel and Anusuya Kawsar from Barts Health NHS Trust. We also introduced a new section, coined “Hot Cases” to allow for real-world challenging cases amongst the BSSCII board and delegates, with excellent cases on management of advanced melanoma and use of Cemiplimab for advanced SCC.The course was well-received by delegates and a further meeting is to be planned for 2020.
